This is a daruma. Daruma are Japanese dolls made in the image of Bodhidharma, best known as the founder of Zen Buddhism. These dolls come in many colours, but are traditionally red. They come with two blank-white eyes. A popular tradition in Japan is to fill in one eye and make a goal or wish that you plan to bring to fruition. On January 4th, 2018, I bought this doll and started my novel.
Today, December 29th, 2018, he gets that second eye. I finished my first draft!
Look at him! He no longer looks angry. Now he just looks...surly.
Truth be told, if I were a more consistent writer, I could knock out a first draft every 3-6 months, but I have a bad habit of taking month long sabbaticals (something I plan to address in 2019).
But still, this is cause for celebration! I've got a long way to go before this is ready for querying: first, a series of edits to address structure, plot, character arc development, etc. Afterwards, a round or two of beta readers. Then, a final pass.
I'm thrilled to have made a monumental first step, and I look forward to sharing my plans for 2019 with all of you very soon.
